WILLIAM E. STONE
Stanford University’s Board of Trustees appointed Bill Stone as Emeritus President of the Stanford Alumni Association in 2001, following his 24-year tenure as its chief executive. He served previously at Stanford University as an Assistant Dean in Student Affairs from 1969 to 1971, and as Assistant to University President Richard W. Lyman from 1971-1977, when he assumed the position as chief staff officer of the then-independent Alumni Association. SAA was merged into Stanford University in 1998, and Bill became a vice-president level University officer reporting to Presidents Gerhard Casper and John L. Hennessy until his retirement.
Long active in CASE as a faculty member, author, assembly chair and Trustee, he was a co-founder and served as third president of the Council of Alumni Association Executives. He has an AB and an MBA from Stanford. Within the consortium Bill focuses on organizational change and renewal, relations among alumni organizations and their boards and their campuses, leadership engagement, and trusteeship issues.
